On The Street: Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, India

It is a common thing to see cattle or camels walking or sleeping in the middle of the street in India. Ahimsa, not killing animals, is one of the central tenets of Hinduism and Jainism. During a two month trip to India we often encountered animals largely on their own. While walking in the city of Jaisalmer, my wife and I happened upon two steers locking horns which ultimately led to an attempted goring of one animal by another. If a man hadn't intervened the outcome would likely have been fatal.
